Vocational visits 職場訪問

Since arriving in Japan I have been lucky enough to visit 4 hospitals and a rehabilitation centre. What has struck me more than anything are the similarities between the work I carry out in Wales and the way departments are run here in Japan. The terminology is the same, much of the equipment and the rehabilitation methods are the same, even the difficulties faced by the department are the same. For example, Paediatric Audiology clinics are under increased pressure partly due to the newborn hearing screen, just as they are in Wales. Interestingly, universal newborn hearing screening has been in place for around the same length of time in Japan as it has in Wales.

日本を訪れてから、大変幸運なことに4つの病院と１つのリハビリセンターを訪れました。
最も衝撃的だったのは、ウェールズで私が携わっている仕事との類似性です。専門用語は同じで、施設やリハビリ方法、そして抱えている問題も同じなのです。

The ENT Drs and Audiologists I have spoken too have all been very welcoming and very helpful and extremely patient for putting up with all my questions! Arigato gozaimasu.

One big cultural difference we have all noticed since coming to Japan is the importance of removing shoes before entering most buildings or sometimes certain rooms within buildings. Even then, on occasions, different footwear needs to be worn for different areas. This can be very confusing for someone who is not accustomed to all this putting on and taking off of shoes. I was so comfortable in the familiar surroundings of the first Audiology department that I wandered into a sound proofed room with shoes on and without a second thought. I was firmly yet politely informed that this was not the thing to do and spent the rest of the visit carefully watching what everyone else was doing shoe wise before I went anywhere! A lesson learnt. 文化の違いとして気付いたことは、建物に入る前に靴を脱ぐことが重要だということです。場合によっては、違う場所では違う履き物が必要なこともあるのです。
この脱いだり履いたりする行為、慣れていない人はとても混乱してしまいます。今日は１つ学びました。すみません！
