Laquerware Painting

Laquerware has a long history here in Japan and the region that we're visiting is particularly well known for the Kishu Laequerware which has been in production for nearly 600 years. Here's a quote from a leaflet we were given during our visit to a Laquerware workshop today:

'The skillful construction of Laquer objects requires many years of study...'

So - we wandered in to the craftman's studio and 5 mins later were given a paintbrush to have a go!! Here are some pictures of us painting by numbers into a stencilled pattern. It may have been 'Laquerware for Beginners' but we're hugely proud of our work.
