On the penultimate day of our Rotary trip we enjoyed a soggy day of sightseeing in Nara, which gave us a chance to test the 'power of the Kag'. Nara was the capital of Japan from 710 to 784 and has many important temples and shrines. It seemed like we shared each area of our trip that day with about 10,000 children on their school trips! Busy busy busy - but we had a lovely relaxed day and got some walking exercise wandering from place to place with our hosts and guide!

According to legend, a mythological god (Takemikazuchi) arrived in Nara on a white deer to guard the newly built capital, and since then deer have been regarded as heavenly animal who protect the city. These days, tame deer roam through the town, and especially in Nara Park. Well - the deer might be considered "tame" but if you have any "shika sembei - Deer Biscuits" when you see them they can get pretty unruly!
