Japanese Meals

Japanese Ambassadorial Scholar, Hayase Yamagishi, from Niigata has been helping out the team in many ways.

Haya is studying Education at Cardiff University and so she has been giving us some training in etiquette and language...and cooking! Haya loves her food but how good a cook is she? We think she's brilliant but then some of us drink our Miso soup with chopsticks so what do we know!

早瀬さんはカーディフ大学で教育学を学んでいて、日本のエチケットや言語・・・そして料理を教えてくれています！早瀬さんは自分の料理を気に入ったようですが、彼女の料理の腕や実のところいかに？私たちは彼女の料理は素晴らしかったと思いましたが、その後みそ汁を箸で飲んで、私たちに一体全体何が解るっていうの！？

Learning Japanese

Well - we're starting to get to grips with the basics of Japanese, but it still seems pretty complicated to me most of the time!

We're meeting as a group with our Japanese teacher, Momoko Kitada, for 90 mins every Wednesday night. Momoko is from the Osaka area and so can teach us the regional variations in the language that we're likely to hear.

So far we've learnt the basics of Hiragana and Katakana, how to write our names and introduce ourselves, some greetings and various other vocabulary and phrases that we're likely to find useful to say or understand. That all seems to be sinking in and making sense, until Momoko plays us scenes in films where the phrases are used and you realise how quickly the words will be spoken when we're in Japan!

Still, we have 7 weeks until we travel, so there are a few more lessons to go...thank goodness!!!

えっと、日本語の基礎を学び始めました！だけど、まだほとんどがとても難しく感じます！
私たちは毎週水曜日に９０分間、私たちの日本語の先生であるキタダモモコ先生からグループレッスンを受けています。モモコ先生は大阪出身なので、私たちがよく耳にすることになるであろう、大阪の方言を教えてくださいます。

今のところ、ひらがなとカタカナの基礎と、名前の書き方、自己紹介、いくつか挨拶やよく使ったり耳にしたりしそうな語彙やフレーズを習いました。全部理解できたかなと思ったんです・・モモコ先生が、そのフレーズが使われている映画を見せてくださって、日本ではこんなに早く話すと解るまではね！

まだ、出発まで７週間あります。だから、まだ何回かレッスンを受けられます・・・ああ良かった！！！
